Choosing a flat roof system can feel confusing, because each one has different strengths, costs and finishes. This page explains the four systems we install in plain terms, so you can understand your options before we visit.
We’re a family-run roofing company based in Westbourne, west of the city, with more than 25 years in business and over 7,000 roofing projects completed. We’ll recommend the system that suits your roof and budget, and explain why.
The Four Flat Roof Systems We Install
EPDM Rubber
EPDM is our recommended flat roofing material and our most popular choice. It’s a single-layer rubber membrane, laid from the roll onto a clean timber deck and bonded with adhesive, then finished with edge trims that hold it in place and give a neat appearance. It sits in the middle of our price range.
Torch-On Felt
Modern torch-on felt is a three-layer system: an underlay, a bitumen layer that is melted onto the deck with a torch, and a mineral cap sheet on top in black or red. It’s a safer alternative to the old hot-bitumen method, and it’s the most economical of our systems while still giving a hard-wearing finish.
Liquid Rubber
Where a roof has an awkward shape, lots of upstands or several details to work around, liquid rubber can be the answer. It’s applied as a liquid, so it forms a seamless, watertight coating, and it’s a lower-cost option that is quick to apply.
GRP Fibreglass
GRP uses glass-fibre matting bonded to the deck with resin, finished with a protective topcoat. It’s our most expensive flat roofing option and one of the most durable, and it’s an excellent choice where a flat roof will also be used as a terrace.
Which System Is Right for You?
As a starting point:
- Best all-rounder: EPDM rubber, for most extensions and garages.
- Tightest budget: torch-on felt.
- Complex shapes on a budget: liquid rubber.
- Roof terraces and maximum durability: GRP fibreglass.
We’ll look at your roof’s size, shape, condition and use before recommending anything, and we’ll talk you through the reasons.
Flat Roof Repairs
Not every problem needs a new roof. Splits, lifted edges, failed joints and damaged trims can often be repaired, particularly on newer roofs. If the covering is failing across the whole roof, or the timber deck beneath has got wet and softened, we’ll explain why replacement is the better option. Chichester Flat Roofing FAQs
Which flat roof system lasts longest?
Of the systems we install, GRP fibreglass is among the most durable, and it’s also our most expensive. EPDM rubber is our most popular choice for balancing performance and cost.
Can I walk on my new flat roof?
If you want to use a flat roof as a terrace, tell us at the quoting stage. GRP is an excellent choice for roof terraces.
Do you repair flat roofs, or only replace them?
Both. We’ll always consider whether a repair will solve the problem first.
What guarantee do I get?
Up to 20 years, depending on the system: 20 years for EPDM rubber; up to 20 years for torch-on felt, depending on the felt used; 20 years for GRP fibreglass, provided the top coat is renewed every three to four years; and 10 years for liquid rubber (20 years when combined with fibreglass and maintained).
Are quotations free?
Yes, with no obligation to go ahead.
